A standard animated infographic export is an MP4 file with a solid background: dark, white, or whatever color the template uses. Drop it into your timeline and it sits as a rectangle on screen. A transparent export keeps the animation itself and removes the background entirely. The bars, labels, map outlines, or stat text float directly over your footage. No box, no colored rectangle behind the graphic. This is how broadcast graphics work, and it is what makes an infographic look integrated into a video rather than placed on top of it. ## The file format: why MOV, not MP4 MP4 does not support transparency. The format has no alpha channel. If you try to export a transparent MP4, you will get a solid background regardless of what the export settings say. The format that carries transparency for video production is MOV with the ProRes 4444 codec. This is the standard for broadcast and professional post-production. Every major desktop editor reads it. The file size is larger than MP4\. A 10-second ProRes 4444 clip can run 100MB or more, compared to a few MB for the same clip as MP4\. For a finished YouTube video this does not matter: you export ProRes for the editing stage, then render your final video as H.264 or H.265 for upload. WebM with alpha is an alternative used in some web and mobile contexts, but it is not standard in professional editing workflows and can cause compatibility issues. ## Exporting from Moshion In Moshion, select MOV as the export format before rendering. The exported file uses ProRes 4444 and carries the alpha channel. The background of the composition is transparent in the exported file. There is no additional setting to enable transparency on your end. The MOV export from Moshion always includes the alpha channel. Export as MP4 and drop into any editor. ## Using the transparent file in your editor ### Premiere Pro Import the MOV file into your project panel. Drag it to a video track above your footage in the timeline. Premiere reads the alpha channel automatically and the background drops out. If the background does not appear transparent, check the clip's opacity settings in the Effect Controls panel. The blend mode should be set to Normal. Any other blend mode will affect how the alpha is composited. For a quick check: look at the clip in the Program Monitor. If you see a checkerboard pattern behind the graphic, the alpha is being read correctly. ### Final Cut Pro Import the MOV file into your library. Add it to your timeline as a connected clip above the primary storyline. Final Cut reads ProRes 4444 alpha channels natively and the background removes automatically. If the clip appears with a solid background, select it and check the compositing settings in the Video inspector. Blend mode should be Normal. ### DaVinci Resolve Import the MOV into your media pool. Place it on a video track above your footage in the Edit page. Resolve handles ProRes 4444 alpha natively. One thing to confirm in Resolve: in the Edit page, right-click the clip in the timeline and check Clip Attributes. Under Alpha, the mode should be set to Premultiplied. Moshion exports premultiplied alpha. If the edges of the graphic look fringed or dark, switching between Premultiplied and Straight will fix it. ### CapCut (desktop) Import the MOV file. In the timeline, add it as an overlay rather than on the main track. CapCut reads the alpha channel from MOV files and removes the background. On mobile, use the Overlay feature rather than dropping it onto the main video track. ## Common problems **Background is still visible.** The most likely cause is that the file was exported as MP4 rather than MOV. MP4 cannot carry transparency. Re-export as MOV. **Edges look fringed or dark.** This is an alpha mode mismatch. In DaVinci Resolve, switch the clip's alpha setting between Premultiplied and Straight. In Premiere Pro, right-click the clip in the project panel, go to Modify > Interpret Footage, and change the Alpha Channel setting. **The clip looks washed out or semi-transparent.** The blend mode is wrong. Set it to Normal in your editor's opacity or compositing settings. **File is too large to import.** ProRes 4444 files are large by design. If your editor is struggling, check that you have enough storage and that the drive you are working from has sufficient read speed. An external USB drive can be too slow for ProRes playback; an internal SSD or fast external drive is better. ## When to use MP4 instead If your infographic sits on a solid colored background that matches the rest of your video, a standard MP4 is simpler and smaller. Transparent export is specifically for when the infographic needs to sit over footage, a different background, or another visual layer. Not every infographic needs it.
