Most articles about After Effects are written for people trying to escape it, and this one assumes you are staying. After Effects is still the deepest motion graphics application available, and the useful question is what to put around it so the slow parts get faster.

## First, check what you no longer need

After Effects 26 absorbed a few jobs that used to need a plugin. Native 3D arrived with parametric meshes, so you can create and animate spheres, cubes, and cones directly in a composition, and there is native support for Substance 3D materials. If you were about to buy a 3D plugin for basic primitives and shading, try the built-in tools first.

Cinema 4D Lite is also still bundled, connected through Cineware, and updated alongside the 2026 release. For modelling beyond primitives it is already installed and most people forget it exists.

## Plugin suites

**Maxon Universe and the Red Giant tools.** Trapcode for particles and generative work, Magic Bullet for looks and grading, Universe for transitions and stylised effects. This is the most commonly installed set in professional AE work, and Trapcode Particular in particular has no real equivalent inside the application.

**Boris FX.** Sapphire for high-end effects, Continuum for a broad utility set, and Mocha Pro for planar tracking and rotoscoping that goes well past the bundled Mocha AE. If your work involves screen replacements or removing objects from shots, Mocha Pro is the one that pays for itself.

**Video Copilot Element 3D.** Still the fastest way to get real 3D objects rendering inside a composition, though native 3D in AE 26 narrows the gap for simple shapes.

## Workflow tools that save the most time

**Duik** is a free rigging system for character animation, and it is the reason a lot of character work in AE is possible at all without hand-animating every joint.

**Flow** replaces the graph editor for the common case, letting you apply and save easing curves without dragging bezier handles for every keyframe pair.

**Overlord** moves shapes between Illustrator and After Effects as live vectors in one click, which removes the most tedious part of building illustrated graphics.

**AEJuice and Motion Bro** manage preset and template libraries so you can drop in transitions and elements without hunting through folders.

[Moshion](/create) generates animated content from a text description: charts, maps, timelines, text animations, text highlights, and complex animated concepts. Export as MP4 and drop into any editor.

## Companion applications worth knowing about

Two serious motion design applications became free in the last year, and both make sense alongside After Effects rather than instead of it.

**Autograph** was acquired by Maxon from Left Angle in June 2025 and relaunched as a free download for individual users. It uses a layer stack and dope sheet, so the model transfers directly from After Effects, and it includes an After Effects project importer along with a Live Link plugin for OpenFX hosts such as DaVinci Resolve. Our [Autograph and DaVinci Resolve comparison](/resources/autograph-vs-davinci-resolve) covers how it fits into a post workflow.

**Cavalry** was acquired by Canva, with a free Starter tier capped at 1080p and Pro at $20 a month. Its animation system is procedural and data-driven, which is the one structural thing After Effects does not do. If you regularly animate things that are driven by numbers, it is worth a look.

## The gap none of them fills

After Effects has no data binding. There is no way to point a bar chart at a spreadsheet and have the bars size themselves to the values. Building a chart means drawing every bar, setting each height by hand from your source numbers, keyframing them, and building and aligning the labels to match. Expressions and scripts help if the chart shape never changes, and writing them is a programming job.

For anyone publishing data-heavy video on a schedule, this is where the hours go, and it is unrelated to how good you are at After Effects.

Moshion sits upstream of your composition. You describe the visual in a sentence, it generates the animation with values, timing, and labels handled, and exports ProRes 4444 with an alpha channel. In After Effects it behaves like any other footage layer: drop it in, position it, add whatever treatment you want on top.

That keeps the parts After Effects is genuinely best at, the bespoke design work and the compositing, and takes away the part that is repetitive data entry with keyframes attached. We go through the tradeoffs in [Moshion vs After Effects 26](/resources/moshion-vs-after-effects-youtube-creators).

## When not to open After Effects at all

Launching a full compositing application to animate a title is a habit worth breaking. For hooks, lower thirds, stat callouts, and title cards, our [free text animation generator](/tools/text-animation-generator-for-videos) gives you 26 animation styles with font, colour, and outline controls, and exports an MP4 without an account. It takes about two minutes, and it leaves After Effects for the work that needs it.
