How to Add Animated Infographics to Premiere Pro: Complete Guide

Premiere Pro handles animated infographic files well, but the correct workflow depends on which file type you are importing. An MP4 with a solid background and a transparent MOV file go into the timeline differently, and a few settings determine whether the result looks polished or broken.

This guide covers both scenarios: solid-background MP4 for infographics that stand alone on screen, and transparent ProRes 4444 MOV for overlays that sit on top of footage.

Before you import: sequence settings

Your Premiere sequence needs to match the resolution and frame rate of your infographic. If they differ, Premiere will either scale the clip or letterbox it.

Moshion exports at the resolution and aspect ratio you select at render time (720p, 1080p, or 4K, in 16:9, 1:1, or 9:16). Check your sequence settings before importing:

• Go to Sequence > Sequence Settings
• Confirm the frame size matches your export (e.g. 1920x1080 for 1080p 16:9)
• Frame rate: Moshion exports at 30fps by default. If your sequence is 24fps or 25fps, the infographic will still play but motion may look slightly different. For most data visualizations, the difference is not visible.

Importing an MP4 (solid background)

Use this when your infographic sits on its own on screen, not over footage. The background color is part of the visual.

1. In the Project panel, right-click and select Import, or press Cmd+I (Mac) / Ctrl+I (Windows).
2. Navigate to your MP4 file and import it.
3. Drag the clip from the Project panel to a video track in the timeline.
4. Premiere places it with its original background intact. No additional settings needed.

If the clip appears at the wrong size in the Program Monitor, right-click it in the timeline and select Set to Frame Size. This scales it to match your sequence without affecting the original file.

Importing a transparent MOV (overlay)

Use this when the infographic needs to float over footage. The MOV file uses the ProRes 4444 codec and carries an alpha channel.

1. Import the MOV file the same way as an MP4 (Cmd+I / Ctrl+I).
2. In the timeline, place it on a video track above your footage. The higher track composites on top.
3. Premiere reads the alpha channel automatically. The background disappears and only the graphic is visible over the footage below.

If the background is still visible after placing the clip, check two things. First, confirm you exported as MOV from Moshion and not MP4. Second, check the clip's blend mode in the Effect Controls panel: it should be set to Normal.

If the edges of the graphic look dark or fringed, right-click the clip in the Project panel, go to Modify > Interpret Footage, and check the Alpha Channel setting. Switch between Premultiplied (Matte Color) and Straight (Unmatted) to see which removes the fringing.

Moshion generates animated content from a text description: charts, maps, timelines, text animations, text highlights, and complex animated concepts. Export as MP4 and drop into any editor.

Placing and timing on the timeline

The most common mistake with infographics in video is placing them at the wrong moment relative to the narration.

The infographic should appear at the moment you begin explaining what it shows, not a few seconds before or after. If your voiceover says "renewable energy grew from 10 to 29 percent over the decade," the chart should start its animation at the word "grew," not during the previous sentence.

To line this up precisely in Premiere:

1. Play your voiceover track and note the timecode where the relevant line begins.
2. Move the playhead to that timecode.
3. Hold Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac) and drag the infographic clip so its start point snaps to the playhead position.

For animated infographics that build over 5 to 8 seconds, the clip should start at the same moment the narration introduces the data, so the animation completes while you are still talking through it.

Adjusting duration

If the infographic finishes animating but you want it to stay on screen longer, extend the clip by dragging its right edge in the timeline. The last frame will hold as a freeze.

If the clip is too long for the available space in your cut, you can trim from the right edge, but only trim after the animation has completed. Cutting into the animation mid-motion looks abrupt.

Opacity and blend modes

For most uses, leave opacity at 100% and blend mode at Normal. Reducing opacity on a solid-background infographic creates a semi-transparent rectangle, which rarely looks intentional.

For transparent MOV overlays on complex footage, a slight opacity reduction (85-95%) can help the graphic feel more integrated rather than pasted on. This is a judgment call based on what is behind the graphic.

Avoid blend modes like Screen or Multiply for infographics. These modes interact with the underlying footage in ways that distort colors and are designed for compositing effects, not graphics overlays.

Color management

Moshion renders in Rec. 709, which is the standard color space for web and broadcast video. Most Premiere sequences default to the same space. If your sequence uses a different color space (HDR, DCI-P3, or a log profile from a camera), the infographic colors may look washed out or oversaturated.

To fix this, go to the clip's Lumetri Color panel and adjust the master white and black levels, or apply a simple Brightness and Contrast effect to match the infographic to the surrounding footage. In most cases the difference is small enough to ignore.

Organizing your project

For videos with multiple infographics, a consistent naming and folder structure in the Project panel saves time. A dedicated bin labeled "Infographics" with each file named by its timecode position (e.g. 0132-barchart.mp4, 0415-map.mov) makes it easy to find the right clip during assembly.

If you generate infographics before starting the edit (as covered in the production workflow article), all files can be imported at once at the start of the session rather than imported one at a time as you hit each moment in the timeline.

Exporting the finished video

Animated infographics do not require any special export settings. Export your sequence as H.264 for YouTube or H.265 for smaller file sizes, as you normally would. The ProRes MOV files from Moshion are working assets, not the final output. They are composited into your sequence during editing and rendered out as part of the final H.264/H.265 export.
