How to Export a Video With a Transparent Background in CapCut

Almost everyone who searches for this has already done the work. The background is removed, the preview shows the checkerboard, the export finishes, and the file has a solid black rectangle where the transparency was.

The problem is the format, not the edit.

Why MP4 gives you a black background

An alpha channel is a fourth channel alongside red, green, and blue that stores how opaque each pixel is. White means fully visible, black means fully invisible, and the greys in between give you soft edges on hair, motion blur, and shadows.

H.264 in an MP4 container stores three channels. There is nowhere for the transparency information to go, so on export the transparent pixels are flattened against a background, and that background is black. No export setting fixes this while the format stays MP4. You have to change the container and codec.

The export that works

Use the desktop app. CapCut for Windows and Mac exposes the export formats you need. The mobile app does not offer an alpha-capable option, so a background you removed on your phone will export filled rather than transparent.

Create the transparency first. Use auto background removal for a subject on a busy background, chroma key for green screen, or a mask for a shape. Check the preview shows a checkerboard, which is how CapCut represents transparent pixels, rather than a colour.

Set the container to MOV. In the export dialog, find the format dropdown and change it away from MP4. MOV can carry alpha-capable codecs.

Choose the alpha-capable codec. On current builds this is HEVC with alpha. Depending on your version you may see it as a codec choice, or as a separate transparent background toggle that appears once MOV is selected. CapCut moves these controls between releases, so look for either the codec dropdown or an explicit alpha or transparency option rather than a fixed menu path.

Verify before you build on it. Import the export into your editor and drop it on a track above a bright solid colour. If the colour shows through, the alpha survived. If you see black, the format did not take.

Cleaning up the edges

Automatic background removal is good and it is not perfect. Two habits catch most of the problems:

Zoom to 200 to 400 percent and use short restore and erase strokes along the edge rather than one long pass. Small corrections hold up better under motion.

Check the result against light, dark, and mid grey backgrounds before exporting. Colour contamination from the original background is invisible on one backdrop and obvious on another, and mid grey is where most fringing shows up.

When your editor still shows black

A correct export can still fail downstream, because HEVC with alpha is not read consistently everywhere. It is dependable in the Apple ecosystem and Final Cut Pro. On Windows, and in some versions of Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve, support is patchy.

If the file is right but your editor disagrees, transcode it to ProRes 4444, which is the most widely supported alpha format across professional editors. Where CapCut runs out

CapCut is removing a background from footage you already have. It cannot originate a transparent graphic. If what you want is an animated chart, a map, or a stat callout that sits over your footage, there is nothing to key out, and putting one together in CapCut means stacking text and shape layers by hand and animating each one.
