Data Journalism Tools: From Raw Data to Animated Story
Most data journalism tools are built for web publishing. When you need video output for social, broadcast, or YouTube, the workflow changes. Here is what actually works.

Most tools in the data journalism space solve the web-publishing half of that problem well. Interactive charts that embed in articles, maps that readers can explore, timelines that scroll: this category is mature and well-served.
The video half is a different situation. When you need an animated visualization for a social video, a broadcast package, a documentary clip, or a YouTube explainer, most of the standard newsroom tools either have no video export or produce output that requires significant post-processing.
The web-first tools
Datawrapper
Datawrapper is the standard for newsroom chart production. Reuters, The New York Times, and hundreds of other outlets use it. You upload a CSV or paste data directly, choose a chart type, and get a clean, responsive embed for your CMS. The charts are well-designed by default, the labeling is precise, and the learning curve is genuinely low.

Infogram
Infogram has more visual design flexibility than Datawrapper and targets publishers who need branded infographics as much as raw data charts. Some animation is available. Like the others, the primary output is web-based.
Knight Lab tools
Timeline.js and Storymap.js from Northwestern's Knight Lab are free, open-source tools used widely in teaching and mid-size newsrooms. They produce clean timeline and map narratives from Google Sheets data. The output is a web embed.
Tableau Public
Tableau Public is the most powerful tool in this list for complex data exploration and multi-layered visualizations. The learning curve is significant. For a journalist under deadline who needs one chart, the time investment is rarely justified. For newsrooms with a dedicated data team, it earns its place.

A practical workflow
For a piece that needs both a web chart and a video clip:
- Build the web version in Datawrapper or Flourish. This takes 15 to 20 minutes and produces a clean, embeddable chart for the article.
- Generate the video version in Moshion from a text description. This takes under two minutes and produces an MP4 for the video package.

What makes a data journalism visualization credible
Regardless of the tool, three things determine whether a data visualization holds up editorially.
Source attribution. The data source, the year it was collected, and if relevant the methodology should be visible in or near the graphic.
