DaVinci Resolve Fusion for Motion Graphics: What It Does Well and What It Doesn't
Fusion is a full node-based compositor built into DaVinci Resolve for free. Where it beats the alternatives, and where it costs you a weekend.
August 10, 2026Fusion is the page most Resolve users open once, look at for thirty seconds, and close. It is a professional node-based compositor with more than 250 tools, a true 3D workspace, and a spline keyframe editor, and Blackmagic gives it away inside the free version of DaVinci Resolve. It is also the reason a lot of editors decide motion graphics are somebody else's job.
Both of those things are true at the same time. This is a look at which kind of work justifies the learning curve.
What Fusion is
Fusion started life as a standalone compositor used on feature film VFX work, and Blackmagic folded it into Resolve as a dedicated page. It is not a simplified version. The node graph, the 3D system, the particle tools, and the keyer are the same lineage that has been used on studio work for years.
The core difference from After Effects is the node graph. Instead of stacking layers and applying effects to each one, you connect operations as boxes with wires between them. An image goes in one side, passes through a blur, a colour correction, and a merge, and comes out the other. Once the model clicks it is a cleaner way to think about compositing, because you can see the whole flow of the image at once and branch it anywhere.
Where Fusion genuinely wins
3D compositing. Fusion has a real 3D workspace with cameras, lights, and materials, not a 2.5D approximation. You can extrude text, bring in geometry, and composite rendered passes with proper depth. For anything involving camera moves through a scene, this is the strongest part of the toolset.
Keying and rotoscoping. The Delta Keyer handles green screen work that other keyers struggle with, particularly hair and motion blur edges. Combined with planar tracking, the cleanup work that eats hours elsewhere goes faster here.
Tracked titles and screen replacements. Attaching a title to a moving object, or replacing the content of a phone screen in a shot, is a well-trodden path in Fusion. The tracker output plugs straight into a transform node.
Recent additions. Resolve 20 brought deep image compositing, a multi-layer pipeline for OpenEXR and PSD files, a vector warp toolset, native Cryptomatte support, and VR 180 handling. These are VFX-facing features rather than motion graphics ones, which tells you where Blackmagic is pointing the page.
It is already installed. No round trip, no dynamic link, no second subscription. Your timeline and your compositor are in the same application, and a Fusion clip updates in the edit without an export step.
Where it costs you
The mental model. Nodes are not harder than layers, but almost every tutorial a video editor has ever watched thinks in layers. You are relearning an interface, and the first few projects take noticeably longer than they would in a tool you already know.
Hardware. Fusion leans on the GPU harder than the Edit page does. On a modest machine, complex comps preview slowly enough to break the feedback loop that makes animation work possible. This is the most common reason people abandon it.
The ecosystem gap. After Effects has two decades of plugins, template marketplaces, and Stack Overflow answers behind it. Fusion has a smaller community, and when you hit an unusual problem there is often no existing answer. For learners this compounds the interface problem.
You may not need it any more. Resolve has been steadily moving basic animation onto the Edit page. Animated titles, simple layouts, and text effects that used to require a trip to Fusion now have native Edit page controls. Before you build a lower third in the node graph, check whether the Edit page already does it.

The part nobody mentions: data
Fusion has no data binding. There is no way to point a bar chart at a CSV and have the bars size themselves, no spreadsheet link, no chart generator. If you want an animated bar chart showing rail density across ten countries, you draw ten rectangles, set the height of each one by hand from your source numbers, keyframe each one, then build and align ten text labels and keyframe those too.
Doing that once is a long evening, and doing it every week for a channel that runs on data is what quietly kills the format. You can reduce the pain with expressions and custom Fuses, but writing those is a programming task, and the setup only pays off if your chart shape never changes.
This is the specific gap Moshion fills. You describe the visual in a sentence, it generates the animation, and you get an MP4 or a ProRes 4444 file with an alpha channel that drops onto a track above your footage in Resolve.

A reasonable first project
If you want to try it without losing a weekend, pick a shot that needs a title tracked to a moving object. Open the clip on the Fusion page, add a Tracker node, track a feature in the shot, add a Text+ node, and connect the tracker to the text position. That single exercise teaches you the node graph, the tracker, and the merge, which covers a large share of what most editors ever need from the page.
Skip the particle system and the 3D workspace until you have a job that actually calls for them.
