How to Add an Animated Video Overlay on Instagram and TikTok
Step-by-step: generate a transparent animated infographic in Moshion, export at 720p, and overlay it on your footage in CapCut, Instagram Edits, or InShot.
April 17, 2026An animated overlay adds a chart, map, stat callout, or timeline on top of your existing footage. The graphic floats over the video rather than replacing it, so you keep the visual context of your clip while adding the information layer on top.
Here is what that looks like in practice:
This tutorial covers the full process: generating the animation, exporting it correctly for mobile editors, and adding it as an overlay in CapCut, Instagram Edits, or InShot.
Step 1: Generate your animation in Moshion
Go to Moshion and describe the visual you want to create. It can be a map, bar chart, stat callout, timeline, or any other infographic type. Some examples:
- "Top 5 countries by population, 2024"
- "$3.2 trillion in US government debt added since 2020"
- "Countries that have joined BRICS"
- "Bitcoin price from 2020 to 2024"
- "Timeline of the Israel-Gaza conflict"
Moshion generates the animation and lets you refine it before exporting. You can adjust the theme, colors, and content with follow-up prompts.
Before exporting, set the aspect ratio to 9:16 if you want the graphic to fill the vertical frame, or leave it at 16:9 if you plan to position it as a smaller overlay element. For most overlays, 16:9 works well: you position it in the upper or lower portion of the screen with your footage visible behind it.
Moshion generates animated content from a text description: charts, maps, timelines, text animations, text highlights, and complex animated concepts. Export as MP4 and drop into any editor.
Step 2: Export as transparent MOV at 720p
For an overlay, you need two things: a transparent background and the right resolution.
First, open the Style panel in the left sidebar and drag the background opacity slider all the way down to zero. This removes the background so only the graphic itself is visible.
Then, at the bottom of the screen, open the export options. Select 720p as the resolution, click Export, then Download. Moshion exports a MOV file with an alpha channel, which is what mobile editors need to composite the graphic cleanly over your footage.
The reason for 720p: CapCut, Instagram Edits, and InShot all cap transparent video imports at 720p. If you export at 1080p or higher, the app will either reject the file or strip the transparency channel, turning the background black or white. 720p is high enough that the graphic looks sharp on screen after platform compression, and it stays within the limit these apps support.
If you do not need a transparent background (for example, if the graphic will take up the full screen rather than overlaying footage), leave the background opacity as-is and export as a standard MP4 at any resolution.
Step 3: Add the overlay to your video
CapCut
CapCut is the most widely used editor for TikTok and supports transparent video overlays directly.
- Open your project and make sure your base footage is on the main timeline.
- Tap Overlay in the bottom toolbar.
- Tap Add overlay and select the transparent MOV file from your camera roll.
- The graphic appears on screen. Pinch to resize it, and drag to position it where you want it. Avoid the bottom 15% of the frame, where TikTok's caption and button UI sits.
- Drag the edges of the overlay clip in the timeline to trim its duration and align it with the relevant moment in your narration or on-screen text.
- Tap the checkmark to confirm.
The MOV file exported from Moshion with background opacity at zero will overlay cleanly. No blend modes or chroma key needed.
Instagram Edits
Instagram's own editing app supports overlay layers and handles transparent MOV files.
- Open Instagram Edits and start a new project. Import your base footage.
- Tap the + button (or the layer icon, depending on your app version) to add a new layer.
- Select Video and import the transparent MOV from your camera roll.
- The graphic appears as a floating layer. Pinch to resize and drag to position it.
- Tap the clip in the timeline and use the trim handles to set the start and end points.
- Tap Done when the position and timing look right.
Instagram Edits handles the alpha channel correctly, so the overlay will sit cleanly on top of your footage with no background visible.
InShot
- Open your project in InShot with the base footage loaded.
- Tap PIP (Picture in Picture) in the bottom toolbar.
- Select the transparent MOV file from your gallery.
- Pinch to resize the overlay and drag it to the position you want on screen.
- Tap the clip in the timeline to adjust the trim and align the timing.
- Tap the checkmark to apply.
InShot renders the alpha channel correctly at 720p. If the graphic background appears white or black, check that you exported from Moshion as a MOV (not MP4) with transparent background enabled.
Step 4: Export and publish
Once the overlay is positioned and timed, export your final video at 1080x1920 (9:16, 1080p). This is the standard resolution for Reels and TikTok. All three editors listed above support this export setting.
Upload directly to TikTok or Instagram. Both platforms compress the video on upload, but starting at 1080p gives the best result after compression. Your overlay graphic, even though it was exported at 720p from Moshion, will look sharp at this final output resolution because the editor composited it at full quality before export.
For Instagram Reels, you can upload directly from Instagram Edits. For TikTok, save to your camera roll first, then upload from the TikTok app.
A note on non-transparent overlays
If you export a standard MP4 (no transparency) and still want to use it as an overlay, most editors can approximate transparency through blend modes. In CapCut, add the clip as an overlay, tap it, and select Blend mode. If your Moshion animation uses a dark theme, Screen or Add mode will make the dark background disappear, leaving only the bright graphic elements visible. This works reasonably well but is less clean than a proper alpha channel export.
For best results, use the transparent MOV export.
